Adam - Insight Investment scheme

After completing an Economics degree at Nottingham University, I had a year out travelling before joining the graduate scheme Insight Investment, HBOS’s asset management arm. Insight is based in London and manages money on behalf of our clients. In short, we either try and give our clients a regular income from their initial investment or try and grow it through investing in a variety of different asset classes. I initially rotated across various parts of the business before settling down within the Fixed Income team. More specifically I work within “Credit”, which is the part of the financial services industry that’s dominated the headlines since summer last year! On a day to basis, I research companies for which we might already be investors or may be considering investing in. Once I’ve formulated a view on a company, I’ll feed this back to the fund managers and discuss any trading opportunities.

Hello Adam,

Very useful. I am interested in applying for Insight Investment, but I have a few questions:

Is the Investment Management Certificate compulsory if I want to apply?

Also what sort of skills are required - analytical and numerical?

Thank you,
Jacky

Hi Jacky, you don’t need the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) to apply.

It is however the first thing that you’ll do when you join Insight. It’s an intensive 5 day course and you take the exam the following week.

As people come from a range of academic backgrounds, it’s a good way of getting people up to speed on all things investment and means that Insight can assume a certain level of knowledge.

In terms of skills required, the job really does draw on a whole host of them! I think it would be fair to say that it would be tough if you weren’t comfortable with numbers but that by no means you need to have done Further Maths at A-Level!

In my particular role as an analyst, it goes without saying that analytical skills are essential. It’s important that you can not only understand the nuts and bolts of how a particular business is run but also look at things from a bigger picture, more macro perspective.
